Crayons and Blood
by Michael Vavrek

Biracial…in America that’s black.
His racial ambiguity an asset;
Intuitively knew which to emphasize.

Didn’t worry that race would swing the election.
All of us more at ease with each other;
Overstate the meaning for our nation…impossible.

Think of American politics…maybe America…as BO and AO.
Young children, first generation it’s natural: black man or
white woman president.
Crayon labeled “flesh” was pale pink…that time is gone.

Racism once a barrier, now a hurdle.

Author's Note: This election-2008-inspired poem captures many aspects of the spirit of (American) life.
