What is a Green Sanctuary?
Green Sanctuary is the designation earned by a congregation that, following specific requirements set out by the Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth, develops programs and practices that are environmentally responsible and sustainable.
To achieve this status, congregational members completed specific activities and documented their work. To earn the designation congregations are required to fulfill at least 12 activities or projects spread over four focus areas––worship, environmental justice, religious education, and sustainable.
A Green Sanctuary is a congregation that lives out its commitment to the earth by taking purposeful steps to create a sustainable life style for its members as individuals. It is a congregation committed to the seventh Unitarian Universalist Principle of “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.”
We see Religious Education, Adult Education, Worship, Building & Grounds and the Social Justice Council already accepting this responsibility and working independently and collaboratively to promote respect for the earth.
