Lenora Thom

Music Director

June 2011

The regular music season is winding down as the Adult Choir prepares for their final appearance before their summer break. “Choir Sunday” takes place on June 5 with just one very special 10 AM service; this is the start of the summer season of one service only. This is also the day of the Annual Meeting, scheduled for 11:45 AM, so please plan to attend these important UUCA events.
And I am as excited as I can be about this year’s choir program! I am calling it “This Moment – An Ordinary Day,” and it is my personal take on the magic found “in the moment” of a simple day. Some of the pieces the choir will present are “I Am in Need of Music” (poem by Elizabeth Bishop); “The Place Called Morning” (Emily Dickinson); “Afternoon on a Hill” (Edna St. Vincent Millay); “And in the Evening” (William Blake); “The Pasture” (Robert Frost); and “The Silence Speaks” (Marguerite Wiele), to name just a few. Noted composers include Z. Randall Stroope, David Brunner, Stephen Sondheim, and our very own Laura Halfvarson Jump, whose setting of the beloved e.e. cummings poem, “i thank you god for most this amazing” is simply gorgeous. This program is one of our favorites to date, so we hope you will be there to enjoy.
The summer music schedule is already nicely in place, thanks to the Music Committee. Co-chairs Laura Jump and Mike Ellis have spearheaded an effort to bring you fine music all summer during my absence. Guest artists include Todd Hoke, singer/guitarist, Ben Orbach, pianist, Vance Reese, organist, Melissa Himelein, pianist, and numerous other guests, including some of your favorite UUCA soloists. I will look forward to seeing you in August! Have a great summer, everyone!
