Lenora Thom

Music Director

December 2009

It’s time to sponsor a hymnal! In the coming Sundays during coffee hour, the Music Committee will set up a table in Sandburg Hall to sell copies of Singing the Journey, the excellent UUA supplement to Singing the Living Tradition. For just $15, you can “gift” this much-needed resource to the church. Stop by our table after services for more info.

Save the dates for MUUsic in the Afternoon! The Music Committee will offer three marvelous concerts for our 2010 Season. (All concerts are Sundays at 4 PM, $10 admission, reception following.) The dates and featured performers are:

January 31: Martin Hargrove, noted bass-baritone, will be accompanied by Scott Ward (Rev. Ward’s very talented brother) in a program of art songs by American composers. Martin sang at services here a year ago, and has one of the most compelling voices I’ve ever heard.

March 7: The Opal Quartet, with exciting new member Qiao Solomon, violin, will perform works by Beethoven, Haydn, Bartok and Brahms. This dynamic young group wowed us last year with a trio concert, and is sure to delight in their new incarnation.

April 25: Award-winning mime Lavinia Plonka will present “Lurching Toward Nirvana: Music, Mime and Musings on the Search for Meaning.” Some know Lavinia as the beloved author of the monthly column CosmiComedy in WNC Woman. Others know her as “that Feldenkrais lady.” In yet another life, she was one of the country’s top mimes. “Lurching Toward Nirvana” is her hilarious compendium of stories, movement pieces and characters on her “Fool’s Journey” toward enlightenment.

I am so excited about these programs and hope you will attend!
