Lenora Thom

Music Director

April 2010

By the time you read this, I imagine most of you will be aware of my recent decision to make this my last season as Music Director of the Asheville Choral Society. There are dozens of reasons, and yet there’s really only one reason – it’s time. It’s simply time for me to move on. It’s been 10 years with ACS, and prior to that, nearly 20 years with the New Jersey Choral Society. Add to that my dozen years as a young choirmaster and assistant conductor, and it’s over 40 years with large choral groups. As I told the ACS folks, “It’s been grand.” But I am ready for a change. Everyone at ACS has been wonderfully supportive of my decision, and I know they will attract many excellent candidates, one of whom will lead them into an exciting future.

Some of you have asked if I plan to stay at UUCA, and the answer is an enthusiastic yes! I told the choir folks, “Sorry, you’re stuck with me!” I plan to expand my growing teaching practice, which I so enjoy, and to have time for new projects as well. Thanks to those of you who have expressed interest, concern and support during this time of transition.

Our next MUUsic in the Afternoon concert features Lavinia Plonka in her funny/fascinating/fabulous program entitled “Lurching Toward Nirvana – Music, Mime and Musings on the Search for Meaning”. Lavinia and I have been friends and colleagues for over 25 years, and she is one of the most creative and entertaining persons I know. I will be collaborating musically on some of her pieces. The UUCA Music Committee sponsors the one-hour program (plus reception) for $10 on Sunday, April 25. Please plan to attend!
