Lenora Thom

Music Director

March 2010

Our next MUUsic in the Afternoon concert is on Sunday, March 7 at 4 pm. The Opal String Quartet, a professional group known for its fiery intensity and polished precision, will offer Philip Glass’s String Quartet No. 5 and Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major in a one-hour program followed by a reception, sponsored by the UUCA Music Committee. Admission cost is $10. Don’t miss this thrilling afternoon!

I have very exciting news from the UUCA Music Program! Choir member Laura Jump, who is also co-chair of the UUCA Music Committee, has WON a national hymn competition!

Last fall, the UUA Margaret Fuller Bicentennial Committee announced a hymn competition. Composers were encouraged to use a text written by Dr. Ed Thompson based on the writings of Margaret Fuller. The hymn had to be suitable for worship and the melody appropriate for congregational singing, with accessible accompaniment. Laura (who is also office manager at the UU Fellowship of Hendersonville) saw the announcement and began working on a hymn. By the deadline of Jan. 10, she submitted four versions of the provided text, of which they could accept two. She picked the two and waited. The call came on Feb. 11 that out of 53 contestants, she is the winning composer!

Laura will receive a $500 prize, and the hymn will be distributed to UU congregations in time for Margaret Fuller’s 200th birthday on May 23. The winning hymn is also to be sung at a special program honoring Margaret Fuller at the 2010 General Assembly in Minneapolis. Congratulations, Laura!
