Poetry Sunday

Poetry Sunday is a service in which members of the UUCA community share their faith through poetry, both their own original works and the works of others.

This special Sunday grew from a proposal by UUCA Member, poet, illustrator and writer Peter Olevnik. He and his wife attended a similar event at the First Unitarian Church in Rochester, New York. "It was a popular, annual summer service which was very well attended," Olevnik says.

With the help of UUCA Members Pat Riviere-Seel, Paul Fleisig, Keith Hearn and Cleve Mathews, Olevnik developed our church's first Poetry Sunday, held in July 2007.

Pat Riviere-Seel, project coordinator, said the theme for the 2007 Poetry Sunday was “Spirit of Life,” and asked that anyone who wanted to share a favorite poem, offer a few sentences about why that poem was important to them in relation to the theme.

In 2008, participants were asked to submit poems that reflected one or more of the Seven Unitarian Universalist Principles, and to briefly describe how or why they felt so. 2009's event returned to the theme “Spirit of Life,” with brand new selections.

We appreciate the hard work of the volunteers who helped make this event a success.
