Lenora Thom

Music Director

January 2009

As I said to mark at our recent staff meeting, most musicians Ii know have a love/hate relationship with december and the holiday season. Okay, truth be told, we call it “hell month” or “the onslaught,” two of the nicer phrases I can think of. The “hate” part is the non-stop rehearsals, many late nights in a row, hours and hours of practicing, the juggling of multiple “gigs,” the stress of it all. The “love” part, however, makes it all worthwhile. For freelance musicians, December is almost certainly the most financially critical month of the year. But on a deeper level, it’s a time when musicians like me hope that, perhaps, in some small way, we contribute to the goodness of the season, that what we do is meaningful, maybe more now than at any other time of year. I hope that the UUCA Music Program (myself, aided by many wonderful choristers in both the Adult Choir and the Intergenerational Choir) will help you to experience the holiday season with a little more joy, hope, peace, love – or whatever makes this time wonderful for you.

Speaking of wonderful choristers, the Adult Choir has recently added several new members. They are: Lydia Davis, Susanne Skok and Rose Gray, sopranos; Maggie Saucier, alto; Jesse Lee, tenor; and Adam Griffith, bass. And speaking of “choral wonders,” we have lovely music for you throughout the whole month, so we’ll hope to see you at services!
