The Earthworm
by Peter Olevnik

Was born without a brain
No limbs to cling or hug
Not even eyes to see
Roamer beneath my feet
Mindless plows the earth
And gives it worth.

No thought of greed or hate,
Or launch an army to fight a war.
Does not seek to gaze upon its face
To bask in its vain reflection,
It will never seek to be
American idol of the week.

This poem suggests the connection of all living things. The supposed lowly earthworm seems to be spared the human fallability of vanity, while it humbly makes its contribution to the earth. (7)
