Don’t ask,
Is the glass half full?
Is the glass half empty?
The glass simply is.
Don’t judge the glass by the water,
Don’t judge the water by the glass,
Each has its capacity to fill,
Its capacity to be filled.
Does the glass have more capacity
If there is less water?
It does not need the water to be a glass.
It stands strong and clear by itself.
If the glass and the water join together,
For this moment of space and time,
Neither gives up its identity,
One does not define the other.
In time each must go its own way,
Their time together spent,
But still they exist apart,
Each with its own capacity.
I wrote this poem in November 2005 long before I even knew that there was an organization named UU. It speaks to the fact that we all have inherent worth and we are not defined by others. My happiness, success, love, failure, et. al. is not measured or defined by anyone else’s accomplishments. (1)
