Lenora Thom

Music Director

March 2009

“MUUsic in the afternoon” debuted on February 15, and I’m pleased to report it was a rousing success. A larger-than expected audience heard a superb program by members of the Opal Quartet, and then enjoyed a lovely reception hosted by the Music Committee. The next program promises to be every bit as entertaining. Kate Steinbeck, flute, and Amy Brucksch, guitar, from Keowee Chamber Music will appear on Mar. 1, performing a marvelously exciting and varied program. In addition to the beautiful Sonata in C Major of J.S. Bach, you will hear music from around the world by living composers Celso Machado (Brazil), Paul Svoboda (Australia), Atanas Ourkouzounov (Bulgaria) and Dana Wilson (America), among others. I, myself, cannot wait to hear this fascinating program! The concert begins at 4 PM and is followed immediately by a Music Committee-sponsored reception, with a suggested donation of only $10. I hope you can attend!

Also on Mar. 1, you can hear the Intergenerational Choir at BOTH services that morning, singing some fabulous Beatles music for YRUU Sunday.
Later this spring, please mark the date for our final “MUUsic in the Afternoon” concert. On April 5, we welcome soprano Anne O’Byrne, accompanied by her husband David Fisk, in an imaginative program of art songs, operatic arias, Irish folk songs, and American popular music.

Lastly, a number of you have asked me about forming a choir for our younger children, sort of the 5 to 7 year-old age group. I am very open to the idea and would love to hear from more of you if you are interested! E-mail me at MusicDirector@UUAsheville.org and we can begin exploring this exciting possibility!
