Music Director

May 2009

Last month in this column, I let you know about the Music Committee’s ongoing project to purchase additional hymnals for the sanctuary, and I invited your individual gifts to help with this effort. I’m happy to report that, so far, five members have responded to my request and donated a hymnal. The Music Committee still hopes to acquire a total of 45 more by the end of the fiscal year. You can add your name to this list with a gift of just $30, which covers the $28 cost of Singing the Living Tradition (the grey hymnal) plus shipping. You will be acknowledged in the front of each hymnal that you purchase. Please help us meet our goal! If you are interested in participating in this effort, please contact Music Committee Chair Joan Fleisig (information@uuasheville.org).

“MUUsic in the Afternoon” finished the season on Apr. 5 with a delightful concert by Irish Soprano Anne O’Byrne and her talented pianist-husband, David Fisk. I have a growing list of first-rate artists who would love to be included in this series, so I am already working on next year’s schedule. Many of you attended and enjoyed these concerts, and I thank you for your support. Hopefully our audiences will grow in future years, so please help us spread the word!

The Intergenerational Choir will make its final appearance on May 17 for RE Sunday. Rehearsals will be only three Sundays from 12:30-1:15 PM: Apr. 26, May 3 and May 10. If you are planning to participate, or need more information, please email me at MusicDirector@UUAsheville.org. It’s been a great year for the IG Choir and I’ll hope that lots of you can participate for this important Sunday.

Lastly, the Adult Choir presents its big musical event, Choir Sunday on June 7. Mark the date!
