Carpe Commodum

Going up or going down
It’s handy to have an elevator speech to carry around.
You UUs will bring more folks to your fertile ground.

The shortest I’ve overheard
Was from UUA president Bill Sinkford,
One God, No One Left Behind.”

But for those UUs who learn apperceptively
Here’s one I heard to help you seize the opportunity
When you’re with me:

We don’t believe what we want; we believe what we must.

Our free and responsible search for truth and meaning
Led to those beliefs founded on conscience and sensing;
That is why we believe what we must.

The marrow of our religion
Is the interdependence of every thing and the importance of every person;
That is what we trust.

We gather in congregations
To help improve the world by investing the gifts of our hearts and hands;
That is what drives our synergistic thrust
.”

Did I go up or down too fast?
I overheard a UU offer this to help the message last,
Simply say, UUA.org.”

We UUs are encouraged to have an elevator speech handy to begin an explanation of our faith to potential new members. This brief poem contains three elevator speeches...short, shorter, and fairly short. May they inspire you to create your own and always have it handy.
